What Exactly is a Call Box?

Today, there are more than 12,000 call boxes situated along America's highways. While it's a comforting thought, very few motorists actually know how they work or whom to call.

Depending upon the traffic density, call boxes can be found approximately one half or one quarter mile apart. Each box is mounted on a pole with a door opening allowing users to face traffic while making a call.

Inside each box is a telephone handset, without a dialing function, that connects directly to the nearest highway patrol. An operator will ask you the nature of your problem, help you to determine your location, and connect you with an assistance provider.

Should you find yourself in need of a call box:

  1. Get your vehicle off the roadway. You may be endangering your life, and the lives of other motorists, if your vehicle is not safely off the road.

  2. Try to note your location or any distinguishing landmarks.

  3. Facing traffic, begin walking towards the nearest call box. Always walk behind a guard rail or as far off the roadway as possible.

  4. After making the call, stay calm and wait for assistance. Remain behind the guard rail or inside your locked vehicles with your windows rolled up and seatbelt fastened.
